What is LANAP?

The LANAP therapy (FDA approved) is a progressive technique using a specialized laser to destroy the bacteria which cause gum disease, and alters the tissue so that it has the opportunity to heal.

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2004, this pulsing laser can distinguish between healthy and diseased gum tissue. The infected tissue and the bacteria living in the tissue are quickly removed by the laser, leaving behind only healthy gum tissue.  The laser’s affect finishes by sealing the gum with a “thermal blood clot” which creates a physical barrier, blocking any bacteria or tissue that could recreate a gum pocket.

How LANAP Works

A. Depth of pocket is measured

B. Laser selectively removes pocket lining

C. Ultrasonic instruments clean root surface

D. Laser disinfects pocket and seals the cleaned tissue

E. Tissue is compressed against the tooth

F. Bite is adjusted through selective contouring

G. Healing results in new attachment

What are the benefits of LANAP?

LANAP therapy is designed to eliminate or substantially reduce periodontally diseased gums and/or pockets to help control or prevent future periodontal disease progression.

LANAP reduces periodontal gum pocket depth by facilitating:

Dr. Smith’s improved visualization of the laser-detached gum pocket soft tissue linings to aid scaling and root planing for removal of tartar (calculus).

Re-attachment of the laser-treated gum tissues to the roots by promoting growth of new bone and/or root surfaces.  LANAP treatments are generally less painful than traditional surgical procedures. LANAP peer reviewed research proves predictable re-attachment of gum tissue and bone growth to promote long term periodontal health and to preserve teeth.
