SURGICAL PROCEDURES

Dr. Smith’s practice provides a variety of surgical services. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary.

NERVE REPOSITIONING

The inferior alveolar nerve which gives feeling to the lower lip and chin may need to be moved in order to make room for placement of dental implants to the lower jaw.  This procedure is limited to the lower jaw and indicated when teeth are missing in the area of the two back molars and/or and second premolar, with the above-mentioned secondary condition.  Since this procedure is considered a very aggressive approach (there is almost always some postoperative numbness of the lower lip and jaw area, which dissipates only very slowly, if ever).  Usually other, less aggressive options are considered first (placement of more but smaller implants).

DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved. Read more

TEETH-IN-AN-HOUR™

TEETH-IN-AN-HOUR™ is a term used to provide patients with fully functioning teeth attached to dental implants in one single procedure. It generally takes about an hour, hence the name. This technique relies on the cutting edge  technology and significant collaboration between both the restorative doctor and the surgeon. Read more

GUM GRAFT

Recession of the gum tissue is generally caused by excessive forces on the teeth. Certain habits such as clenching and grinding are the most common reasons but other factors can include over-aggressive toothbrushing, orthodontic treatment, trauma, genetics, acid reflux,  and/or improper fitting restorations or partials.  Recession will lead to loss of the protective barrier (attached tissue) around the teeth which can contribute to bone loss; exposure of the root causing increased sensitivity, root decay and unsightly teeth; and increased mobility of the teeth. OSSEOUS SURGERY

This treatment is employed when pockets are extremely deep and local irritation is unable to be eliminated with more conservative methods. The procedure provides the Periodontist access to the roots which can then be thoroughly cleaned of bacteria and toxins. The Periodontist also has access to defective restorations or boney irregularities which can be then be smoothed and modified .  Although the procedure does involve reflection of the gum tissue and sutures, it is very comfortable and generally has minimal post-operative discomfort.
